Authentic, 1-on-1 English right at home

English is the most commonly spoken, and studied, language in the world. Proficiency, however, doesn't come about easily in a place where most people’s mother tongue is a language that is so fundamentally different from English.

Speak3 is filling the gap with specialised 1-on-1 English reading and dialogue practices, in which learning materials and progress monitoring are always personalised to ensure the best result. Learners of all ages will be assigned a dedicated native-speaker Language Coach for the regular online reading practices and interactive speaking sessions. Our iSpeakPerfect corrective feedback is always 1-on-1 to ensure timely and personalised evaluation of course progress.

Why is it important to be a good reader?

Our choice to emphasise reading as part of our iSpeakPerfect course is backed by expert research.

  • A fluent reader reads at a rate that mirrors speech (Stahl and Kuhn, 2002). Which means if you can read smoothly, you can speak fluently and confidently.

  • A good reader has high phonemic awareness, which is the ability to hear and manipulate letter sounds. This helps develop skills like spelling, writing, and listening.

  • Reading builds a bank of vocabulary, which can help students achieve high academic scores.

  • Fluent readers are able to automatically recognise words, thus freeing up space for comprehension (to take meaning from text). Candidates with good comprehension skills will attain outstanding scores in their reading comprehension tests.

Benefits beyond speaking

All of our activities and teachings incorporate three core language skills: Speaking, Listening and Reading. With each language skill mutually reinforcing each other, not only will progress come about faster, it will also be easier to retain language skills and set the stage for better writing.

Here are some of the activities we provide that focus on the students’ reading text, all of which contribute to benefits beyond just speaking:

  • Jigsaw reading, i.e. getting students to rearranging different parts of a text and put it all together
  • Gap filling, i.e. certain text are removed and learners fill in the gaps either by themselves or by choosing from a word list
  • Listening to an extract and writing what is heard (dictation)
  • Answering reading comprehension questions about the content of the text
  • Matching definitions with words in the text
  • Choosing a description which summarises the text

Encouragement makes the difference

All our language coaches are trained to adhere to the principle of personalised encouragement + corrective feedback in their teaching. Studies show that not only encouragement correlates with better academic performance, but also helps learners with developing academic self-efficacy.

In fact, just one instance of verbal encouragement before an academic task can significantly boost performance (Darcy and Krüger, 2012).

Our teachings are structured upon the leading-edge theories on EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learning, particularly theories on the integrated-skills approach to learning and the effects of encouragement on academic performance.
